Zimbabwe opposition party MDC Alliance’s spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere arrested this week has been remanded in custody until Friday. She is facing charges of communicating falsehoods prejudicial to the state. She took to social media last week commenting on reports that a police officer had killed an infant at an illegal pickup point in Harare. Lawyers say the law being applied by the authorities no longer applies as it was voided by the Constitutional Court. Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and opposition politician Job Sikhala are also in custody facing similar charges in what seems to be a clampdown by authorities on critical voices. International Law expert Dr Thompson Chengeta explained to SABC News why he feels the actions taken by Zimbabwean authorities are both unconstitutional and shameful.
