Treasury has just two days to put the finishing touches on government’s spending plans.
Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, will deliver the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on Wednesday. Unlike the February budget, it lays out spending priorities for a number of years, and not just one, and specific funding measures like tax changes are not usually announced. A big headache for the Finance Minister in South Africa’s debt burden. In June Mboweni said he could achieve a total of R400 billion of savings to help stabilise South Africa’s debt in a few years’ time. But economists are questioning if that’s possible.
