The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a blow to efforts to revive the ancient N|UU language. Language classes meant to teach young Khoisan children were halted at the beginning of the nationwide lockdown. One of the teachers of the language says parents were reluctant to send their children for language lessons as they feared COVID-19 infections. There are now only two people alive who can speak the language fluently – both at an advanced age. The language is listed as critically endangered by UNESCO.
