The prolonged drought and economic crisis pushed millions of Zimbabweans closer to starvation in what the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned was an increasingly desperate situation. Nearly half of the country’s population of 16 million people now face food insecurity. The WFP plans to double the number of people it assists, up to 4.1 million but needs over $200m (R2.85bn) for its emergency response in the first half of 2020 alone.
