WATCH: ‘We will return,’ say Zandile Gumede supporters after day of violence, arrests

It was a day of running battles and high emotion as Zandile Gumede supporters and police clashed on Thursday in Durban, leaving well over 20 people detained, arrested or injured by the afternoon.

Morning clashes left seven supporters arrested, one journalist detained and another manhandled outside city hall, where around 500 supporters of the embattled eThekwini mayor assembled.

After a brief midday recess at Gugu Dlamini park in the Durban CBD, the supporters marched on ANC headquarters and then Durban Central Police Station to attempt to negotiate the freedom of their arrested comrades.

However, more clashes ensued with police firing rubber bullets and stun grenades at the group preventing them from reaching the police station. Subscribe to News24:
