Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the only source of official statistics in the country is threatening to close its doors as it’s in dire need of cash to do research. The council is demanding funds from the government as well as the appointment of more people.
Stats SA says it needs approximately R200 million to keep its service going. According to Stats SA, R160 million was stripped from its budget in 2015. The Chairperson of Statistics Council Professor David Everatt joins us via Skype.
