President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Provincial Funeral for veteran actress Nomhle Nkonyeni, citing her outstanding work in Arts and Culture.
Nkonyeni served the arts industry for more than fifty years.
At the time of her death, aged 77, she was empowering a younger generation of actors in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, and promoting the language of IsiXhosa.
The star of the stage and big and small screens was recently honoured with the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by the President.
She used creative arts to fight against apartheid, co-founding ‘The Serpent Players’ with the likes of John Kani and Athol Fugard in the sixties.
