Scourge of corruption | International Anti-corruption day

As the world commemorates International Anti-Corruption day, we look at the impact of the scourge in the Free State. The province has been the epicentre of corruption over the years, and several powerful figures in the province have been implicated in all manner of wrongdoings.

For instance, more than R200-million meant for emerging farmers in Vrede, has been siphoned. In July, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation to allow the Special Investigations Unit to look into the awarding of a R250 million contract by the Free State provincial government, relating to the allegedly irregular “Asbestos Contract”.

The Hawks also raided the and seized documents and computer hard drives at the Free State Development Corporation. The F.D.C has allegedly received R104 million from the collapsed VBS mutual bank.
