The South African Municipal Workers Union, SAMWU, have blasted government’s Expanded Public Works Programmes, EPWP’s, calling them “exploitative”.
This President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address, Thursday, where he announced that the EPWP would be intensified in areas like maintenance, clearing vegetation, plugging water leaks and constructing roads.
The EPWP projects were introduced by the government in 2003 as a complimentary measure to reduce poverty and curb rising unemployment, by providing short term low-income employment.
A recent report released jointly with the department of Public Works, states that the programme created close to ten million short term jobs since 2004. We are now joined in studio by Koena Ramotlou he is the general secretary at SAMWU.
