70-year-old musician Ray Phiri lost his fight against cancer yesterday morning. A member of the band Stimela with whom he conceived gold and platinum-winning albums, Ray played a pivotal role in the music industry of South Africa. He was also a founder member of the Cannibals, which was later joined by the late soul singer Mpharanyana. Ray Phiri’s last moments were spent surrounded by close friends and family. The music veteran died in a Nelspruit hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning after a battle with lung cancer. To share some of his memories of Ray, we are joined in studio by Peter Tlali who is the founder of Joy of jazz and also a man who played a huge role in promoting music in the country.
