Jannie du Plessis, a journalist at the Vaalweekblad newspaper in Vanderbijlpark, was the first reporter on the scene after a walkway collapsed at Hoërskool Driehoek last week. Four children were killed and 20 hospitalised.
Moments after the accident, parents, paramedics and members of the community launched their own rescue effort with their cars’ jacks. They broke off a netball pole from the playing field and used it to prop up the remainder of the walkway. Du Plessis said the children were rescued from the rubble within 30 minutes.
