The Eastern Cape government has put together a team of experts to intervene in 14 dysfunctional municipalities in the province. They face financial difficulties and are unable to execute their duties. Some are even bankrupt and two have since been put under administration. The Enoch Mgijima municipality had its assets, to the value of 56 million rand, attached and auctioned to pay a construction company. Workers at the Great Kei Municipality have not been paid since May 2018.
