DR Congo President Joseph Kabila has stood by the timetable for delayed elections despite demands that he step down ahead of the poll. In his first press conference since 2012, Kabila said Congo will have to have elections as scheduled. Kabila has been in power since 2001. His constitutional term in office expired in December 2016 but he stayed on, under laws enabling him to remain in office until his successor is elected. Kabila is referring to the date of December 23, 2018, announced last year.
