So what does today’s judgement mean for other South Africans whose family members may have been murdered by the apartheid Security Police? The Truth and Reconciliation gave perpetrators an opportunity to come clean, or they would be prosecuted.
But those involved with the TRC itself have admitted that, due to a lack of resources, thousands of cases were missed or could not be investigated properly.
Hundreds of cases were handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority but it has also complained of a lack of capacity to investigate.
